James 4:8 Draw Close to God
James tells us what he learned from Jesus as his brother. First hand experience is an impactful teacher.
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8
James is one of Jesus’s brothers. He grew up with him. He may have even experienced some sibling rivalry.
Can you imagine the dynamics of living with a perfect brother?
James learned from Jesus through first-hand experience. I wonder if he resisted the teachings that were so radical, for example, loving your enemies, turning the other cheek, and forgiving others. When James wrote his wisdom down, it was after Jesus was crucified. He was an adult. Perhaps he was reflecting on his life with Jesus and feeling he must pass on the wisdom he may not have appreciated. He was giving guidance and direction to his community that was struggling to live in the peace of Jesus after he was gone.
What do you think James was trying to tell us?
What is the main point he is making for us today?
How do these verses speak to you?
