When you have spent time with someone you love, words are not even necessary for you to understand each other and communicate. Slight nods of the head, eyes moved in a certain way, movements, and sighs can say more than any word. You hear and you listen. It is much the same way when you hear God’s voice.
How do I know if I’m hearing God’s voice?
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.”
Jeremiah 33:3
I realized as a child that I have a conscience. My gut is rolling. My heart is pumping. My body is shouting to me to stop before things get worse. This recognition is the voice of God helping me to live as he directs. I often hear his voice when I am about to make a mistake. If I choose to ignore it, I will face the consequences.
Over time, I have learned to listen for it. I know it is part of me. I recognize it. I wait on it.
I heed it. What I hear is more what I feel in my body, like my conscience as a child, rather than a clear voice speaking to me. There have been times when I have strongly heard my thinking voice tell me to stop, start, leave, continue, begin, or end something that needed immediate attention. It took time for me to realize that hearing God’s voice was part of me my whole life and will not ever leave me.
In what ways do I hear God’s voice?
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”
Revelation 3:20
I accept I hear God’s voice when He speaks to me through others. Often, my devotional will be precisely what I need for my situation on that particular day. Someone may post a scripture that lifts me or provides guidance and direction for me. A friend may call to check on me when I need reassurance. I hear God’s voice in all of those ways. I listen to wise counsel from trusted people as I hear God’s voice through them.
How can I hear what God is telling me?
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
John 14:26
I listen for God’s voice in scripture. When I am reading the words of the Bible, I ask God to show me how these words relate to me.
What can keep me from being able to hear God’s voice?
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.
James 1:19
Don’t let frustration keep you from hearing God’s voice.
I can react and fall into trouble by not waiting long enough.
I want to feel some semblance of control,
I rush to do something instead of waiting.
I focused not on listening, but on doing something even if it’s wrong.
How can I prepare myself to hear God’s voice?
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105
I spend time with God.
I pray and ask for guidance to hear what God is saying to me.
I try not to act until I know that I have heard clearly what I am to do or not to do.
